Red Rooster And Oporto Might Be About To Collapse, And Their Loyal Fans Are Devastated

Noooooooooo.

A bunch of Red Rooster and Oporto franchises say they're in trouble, maybe even on the verge of collapse, and chicken fans are absolutely devastated.

The news of the franchises in trouble came from a submission made to the Senate inquiry into the Franchising Code of Conduct. Both Oporto and Red Rooster, as well as something called Chicken Treats, are owned by the same parent company, Craveable, and franchise owners told the inquiry they reckon the owners are doing a pretty bad job.

Specifically, franchisees took issue with things like Craveable allegedly making them get their goods from suppliers that are more expensive than the local grocery store. They also took issue with the fact Craveable owns a bunch of chicken restaurants in the first place, claiming there's a conflict of interest in owning both Oporto and Red Rooster.

"The common complaint for Red Rooster chicken has been 'it is the same chicken, which is available at the local super market for half the price.' A simple move like adding flavors and sauces cannot be done because that competes directly with Oporto; Red Roosters [sic] sister brand," the franchisees wrote.

They also pointed out that the parent company often opened Oporto and Red Rooster stores pretty close to each other, making them compete for chicken-loving customers.

We don't really know how many stores are in danger of collapse — the submission just said there were many franchises in distress, and "many more on the verge of bankruptcy". Craveable claimed today that its franchise owners earn on average $135,000 each per year, and are not struggling at the edge of bankruptcy as the inquiry submission claims. But fans are taking the news pretty seriously, and they're pretty devastated at the thought that their local Red Rooster might close.

Then again, other people are taking the opportunity to let us know they're too good for Red Rooster. These people are wrong.
