Firstly, we're going to be looking at the basics. The two must-have products you'll be wanting in your make-up bag!
- Foundation. It'll be your go-to beauty item when you start getting spots, and applying it can really do a world of good when you're not feeling very confident. If you're in your early teens and you haven't had any spots just yet, I'd go for a powder foundation rather then a liquid one. For anyone with spots or combination skin, I'd recommend getting a really good liquid foundation. If you can get your mum to purchase one for you, then that's great but if not, I'll be talking about some really good budget brands later on that'll help you pick up the basics for a lot less. With liquid foundations you want to try and get a oil-free one so it doesn't clog your pores. A good one will stay put for all of school and if you're not wearing an oil-free foundation, six to seven hours is a long time for it to be sat on your skin, clogging up your pores and you'll end up with spots by the next morning. Not at all what you want! If it's your first time buying foundation, ask your mum or a friend to go with you and don't be scared to try out the testers! That's why they're there. To get a good foundation, you'll want to match it to your skin tone. That's the natural colour of your face and the best way to match the colour is to test the foundation on the inside of your wrist as it's the closest match to the skin colour on your face. If you're not sure, and your mum is with you, ask her advice. She's more than likely been wearing make-up longer then you've been alive so, hopefully, she's bound to know a thing or two! (Another benefit of bringing your mum is she'll probably be excited to share the experience with you and might offer to pay for a few things, too!)
- Mascara. This is without a doubt, the one item every woman would bring with them on a dessert island. It can make the world of difference and is the one thing I've never left the house without wearing. It definitely gives you a little boost of confidence. The one downfall of mascara is that there's just so many to choose from, which each offering another miracle they reckon they can preform. If you're in school, you don't want sky-high lashes that are blue or purple because it used to be the one thing at my school that girls used to get pulled up on, but if you've JUST spent your pocket money on a mascara, you're going to wear it no matter what! So, for your first mascara, you'll just want a really good one in black that will thicken your lashes and define your eyes and any good budget brand does just that so you're in luck! Best thing to do is to look at the prices of the mascara, and then look for thickening mascara, if it says lengthening or falsies mascara, it's going to make your eye-lashes overly long and full and you're going to get into trouble if your school is strict with make-up.
Those two things are your utter most basic items you'll want in your make-up bag to take to school with you.
Great Tip: A really good budget item to pick up is talcum powder. It sounds really silly but it's a life saver. If you can pick some up, doesn't matter how cheap it is, it works great to set your foundation. Try and find a little pot you can put some in to take with you, I use empty powder foundation pots and I squeeze some in and use a brush or a sponge to apply a really thin layer over my skin. You don't want to apply loads of it or you'll look like a ghost but a very tiny amount will help to keep your foundation in place, and it's also really good to sprinkle on the roots of your hair to give it some bounce instead of buying bottles of dry shampoo which are getting really expensive lately.
In the next post, I'll move on to where to find these products for a great price, and then we'll be moving on to other items like eye-liner, blusher and lip-gloss, but for now foundation and mascara are the best two products to start with. :)
